I Tried Creating a Game Using Real-world Geographic Data

A little experimental game I've been working on recently, where you fly around a tiny version of the world and deliver packages to various cities. Would love to hear any ideas you might have about how this could be taken further!

I think this game would be super fun 1 vs 1 (or 1 vs 1 vs 1 and so on), where the players get a list of 10 cities around the world and have to deliver the packages as close and as fast as possible.

Maybe you could make multiple modes. Some ideas: Chill mode where you can just fly around and maybe with an arrow pointing to where you need to go. Battle mode where other planes try to stop you. Speed mode where you try to be as fast as possible.

Here is my ideas for cool things to add to the game - . A practice mode where you can fly around delivering packages to countries so there could learn the map but it shows country names and maybe cities . Then an option to go into the regular mode that you have already created to use what they have learned from the practice mode . A timed mode where you get given a place to deliver a package and depending on what time you do it in and how close you get it you get bronze, silver or gold and if it takes you too long you fail . A cool cartoony menu as I really like the style you have created for the game . I like the idea that the clouds would slow you down a bit so there would be something too slow you down in the timed mode but it wouldn't really make sense . More obstacles in some of the modes like other planes but not in the timed one because to point of that would be to see how fast you can remember where a place is and get there . Showing famous landmarks around the map to make it easier for newcomers to geography and as a way to remember places . Some sort of stats tracker (not exactly sure what it would track but it would show your improvement which would motivate you . Seems like a small game so I don't know if loading screens would be needed but maybe loading screen tips that would tell you facts about places that could maybe help people find stuff . Maybe a hard mode where borders are taken away along with landmarks for people who want to fully test their skills . This game on steam with all of these features and hopefully more, I've seen some other really cool suggestions in the comments

Man oh man this is something. I would call this absolutely amazing, I have so many ideas for this project its crazy. Like what if you gave an option to change perspectives so if the player wants they can change how they're viewing the world.Or even adding a way to have other airports involved. You can require gas levels for certain "missions" to deliver, and adding those airports would be locations where you can fill up and keep going. Heck you could add a system where there's emails to the player and make a UI that lets you pick certain missions. I mean the ideas are flowing and I hope you continue with this honestly.( Im from Vermont US)

yeah, this is very cool. the dude is good at what he does. this game could definitely teach the younger clueless generations about the geography of the world and get them to be able to know the location of least all of the countries in the world and their capital cities, and maybe even a handful of the large cities for each country with perhaps more focus being put on large important countries like the united states that have a lot of relevant cities. heck, dude could even make it so that you need to make deliveries in each state, thus teaching the kids about the location of all of the fifty states and their respective capitals. and if he really wanted to, he could include major rivers, lakes, mountains, deserts, big national parks, etc. and important structures like the hoover dam, the statue of liberty, the golden gate bridge, etc. and i guess eventually he could do the same with the wonders of the world and stuff like the eiffel tower, big ben, etc. from first world countries that people generally care about. and maybe even move to include stuff from third world countries like china and have stuff like the great wall of china, the port of shanghai, etc. he wouldn't even necessarily have to model any of them, just assign invisible dots to each one of them with the game telling you how close you were after you drop the package the same exact way that it works for the countries themselves. i bet you that it would be very easy to look on the internet and find lists with all of the geographical coordinates of each of those structures and geographical features. and if adding shapes that light up to show the outline of the state in question and give you an idea of how close you were for each of the fifty states is too difficult, he could do that just for north america, since that's probably what is the most important for kids to learn about. knowing about the individual states and the respective capital cities of those states for countries like austria or estonia or even places like the united kingdom, france, germany, japan, etc. probably isn't a priority, but it would be great for at least north america since that's genuinely useful knowledge. there's a lot of potential here. the current generation is completely clueless about most of the world around them, down to the point where most couldn't even point at the fifty states, let alone their respective capital cities. it's pretty sad to be honest, and maybe this game could fix that. now of course, it would be mostly intended for children between probably like five and ten years old, but i'm sure that even some younger adults could greatly benefit from it.

This game looks super promising! I think the art style is amazing and great to look at! I think gameplay wise it would be fun if you had a time limit for how long it takes to drop your packages off. Depending on how close you drop the package and how fast you get it there you can get more points. It would be cool if you could spend points to upgrade or customize your plane. You could also consider incorporating fuel and airports where your plane can recluse at. Also I think it would be good if to highlight the country you had like a light transparent blue over it or even had the country name show up in big text. Right now it is still difficult to see the highlight. I am excited to see where this goes!

This is such a cool foundation for a game. My thoughts are very simple minded - I would introduce a point system based on how close to your target you dropped off the package. The more points you get, the more upgrades you can purchase such as base speed / amount of fuel [before needing to land at a hangar] / maybe even a weapon system. Definitely want some baddies flying around trying to take you down - maybe if you manage to wipe a particular type of plane out it will give you a hint as to where your next delivery is? Very, very cool stuff!

Oh boy, just discovered this channel and loving it. Keep going man, and have a good weekend :) Some ideas to polish the gameplay: - Add some symbolic texture for cities/towns/stations, no names visible but it would help have an idea of where a package would make sense to be delivered. - Add fuel and refueling (in flight?) - Day/Night cycle would be interesting, you already mentioned it - Weather (storms, snow, etc) - Wind impacting the flight model (arcade) and the package dropping location - Add not-in-scale animals typical of the various earth regions (randomly popping up on the rendered slice of globe and changing when getting re-rendered)

@Ben Rae Would be pretty cool to have a game where you're delivering renewable resources, like supplies to build solar panels and such. Each area could have coal plants, smog, rising sea levels etc; and as you deliver packages they get replaced with solar panels, ocean/wind turbines, grass, clearer skies, normal sea levels; etc. It would be a mix of geography and saving the planet.

This is so very cool! I love how you throw in trivia and bugs and all the tiny bits and pieces that you encountered along the way. Both entertaining and educating! Speaking of education: I think it would be a very cool edutainment geography class project for schools. Before I had even finished watching the video, I thought "hey, wouldn't it be a fun gameplay mode if the player had no clue where the destination city was, but had to guess instead and would be scored on the distance to the actual target?" - well... seems you beat me to it. I think it's brilliant! It's like the game GeoGuessr, but in a comic 3D style. I absolutely love your game (and I could see myself just dashing through clouds for hours, sooo satisfying!)

Definitely agree adding weather and other natural phenomena is the way to go. I feel like the gameplay could also be more than just dropping packages, though. Just a random thought I had, maybe the ships (or something) could communicate to you and give you a message or something to pass on to some other place in the world. I think adding more elements like that, where you have to juggle multiple things at once, could make the game more interesting, but maybe thats just me :)

You can improve your border line texture by modifying your distance map by the terrain slope (the distance will also include z then). That unfortunately only works for a fixed z scale of your rendering. Using the distance map itself to render a crisp border in the fragment shader would be the best solution. You would need to store not only the x/y distance but additional z offset to the closest border and take that into account. I might even just store the xyz vector to the closest border. That will be handy later

This is honestly perfect for teaching kids geography, I think it would be improved by the countries changing colours once you'd delivered the package there, so people remember where they'd been, plus it would help with deducing where somewhat obscure countries/cities are. Also, I think that the player should get maybe 5/10 guesses then clues start appearing for the locations. Maybe also add a HUD with a compass, the objectives and if you added in mobs of some kind maybe a health bar or something, and maybe limit the cities to major cities within the respective countries or capital cities. idk but this has so much potential

This game could become really engaging if you added some "learning" mode, where players are guided to the destination (with some form of arrow, minimap or whatever) for the first few flights, so they have a chance to memorize the locations of the countries/cities. And this could get gradually more difficult, starting with the big, well known countries and proceeding to smaller countries along the way.

At the beginning and after so many packages you have 'flight planning' where you get to look at the list of deliveries and choose a route. This would only be a few in the beginning, and steadily increases as the game progresses. Also, maybe limit the area to less than the whole world for beginners. say only a few countries at first, then a continent, then the world.

I love the way this game looks, but as I was watching the gameplay I found myself getting a bit confused of what direction you were going. One way I could think of to fix this is adding some sort of compass at the top of the screen? Also, a visible scoreboard that tracks your best score as well as your score for the run you just did could be fun.

Watching from Vermont USA, this looks like a ton of fun. I definitely think the top down down view while perhaps making it easier to see where you are is inferior as it makes it so you can see the height detail as easily. It would also make it more fun for packages as you have to time it correct, you could even give the packages directional momentum based off flight path when dropped. This momentum could take effect until the parachute opens. And when the parachute open if you are going to add wether like you mentioned you could have the wind blow the package in off course. To aid the player you could include current wether data on Screen so they have to adapt for drift with their drops. This would make the accuracy potion of the game a lot harder but in my opinion a lot more fun too!! Overall fantastic job this was so much fun to watch!

This is really very good! It would be amazing to have something like this for geography or history at primary schools. If pupils could answer some questions asked about certain locations they can pinpoint that. I am a music teacher, teaching my pupils mostly about old European composers. But there are musical genres everywhere on the globe so musically this could be some sort of a holy grail too. I can imagine that the musical coloration shifts according to the location where one is flying over. Endless possibilities Sebastian. I wish we could elaborate on that (I can compose and program the music, apart from my composition and orchestration degree I also have a degree on world music) but you're probably too busy for that. 😏 Anyway, great stuff. Inspiring too!! Greetings from the Netherlands, Arnold

So, here's a suggestion: you can have different difficulty levels. Some cities are better known than others, so on the easier difficulty settings, you get big cities, like London, Paris, Barcelona. Everyone will know where these cities are. Then when you move to a higher difficulty, you add smaller cities to be found. This gives the player a sense of progression. Maybe on day 1 of playing, you can only complete level 1, but as you learn where the smaller cities are, on day 2 you might complete level 2.

To add to this, there should also maybe be different assist levels as well. On a low level, you get a compass pointing to the city. Then on higher levels, the compass turns into just a warmer/colder beep, until you get no help at all. I think it would also be interesting to put a time element into the mix as well, where you get graded on how fast you get to the city. This could especially be a good test when you have lower assists. The grade should sort of be a weighted average based on all these elements, kind of how Forza Horizon adjusts the reward you get from a race based on the amount of assists you have turned on. Maybe the grade gets you points you can spend on nicer planes and stuff??
