In this video I build a small off grid cabin in the remote woods of the upper Midwest. If you've ever wanted o build a cabin in the woods...this is one way to do it.
Hands down this is the best thing I’ve seen on THmy ever in my life :) thank you 🙏
First time watching yours all the way start to finish. Usually watch Girl. When you were trying to raise that wall alone I was screaming "put it down!" Memories of my inexperienced ex working on our house and then the addition. Lost a few years of my life then! But I knew you would get it done unmaimed or you wouldn't be on! Thanks. Great film.
What part of the 603? I was born and live in the Keene area Cheshire county.
@Bushradical do u rent these cabins out? :)
@Donald Ducko what does this have to do with cabins in the woods?
I admire and envy builds like these. Wish I knew more about how to build things like these. Thank you for sharing.
Never too late to learn.
@1ik what actually made you respond w that
I came across this video by accident. I started watching, and I COULD NOT stop watching. This was so relaxing and satisfying to watch. Loved seeing this no nonsense, practical aspect to building a cabin. On To Part 2!
.... you stole my comment before I could post it ... oh well thanks ..... no intention of building a thing here though but enjoyed this man's zeal for constructing that captivating little cabin ......
Right on! love this
As someone who builds sheds for a living, the walls are heavy asf, we usually get 2 or more depending on how big or how small it is. Now the gable walls are something else. Awesome stuff man
"Nothing fancy. Just a simple little cabin... in the woods." Awesome to a magnitude of infinity! Great video.
Come to Northern British Columbia…vast forests where I have 3 small log cabins built on 3 unnamed lakes.
The amount of work that went into filming this build can't be understated. Great job my man. On both the filming and the construction.
@Why So Serious? just enjoy the video smh
Six thousand thumbs up for "the amount of work that went into this build can't be understated"?? Think, people, think. Writing, too, is a craft, a construction.
@Nathaniel Ferneau I think you understate as well as underrate the Nazis when you use the term "grammar nazi". Just saying. A little historical perspective is never overrated!
I will never sit by the fire in such a forest hut ... But it's so cool! Thank you! Look here I tried too thmy.info/dev/gspnpc6r1ny-gZU/w-d-xo.html
I never comment on any youtube video, however this right here this is gold. The great editing and just raw feel of watching nature and smooth guitar in the background is absolute perfection. The inner man in me feels like building something now @ 2am, thank you for sharing! I enjoyed every minute of it!
I have learned so much watching your cabin builds. Really great work. Started my own a couple of months ago and can't wait for spring so I can finish it. Really curious to see what you are going to do with the exterior? Just paint the plywood? or siding?
I’m 23 years old and building a cabin somewhere for the winter has been a dream of mines. Glad I came across this video. Hopefully one day I’ll have my own cabin. 🙏🏽
Get second hand supplies, has character, saves the earth and it’s good for your pocketbook🤷🏼♀️✌️
@MyGuitarTwerks Goodluck with your schooling!! 😭 no need to be nervous you got this 😈
Im also 23. And yes, building something like this is a dream of mine too. If you also worked at a hardware and lumber store, youd also start to understand the cost of all this. The amount of motivation, money and time put into this project is a lot. Step one is getting into a carpentry school. There you should learn all the tips and tricks you need to know. Im working on saving up for carpentry school. So nervous. Lol.
I’d love to build something like this. So cool to see. I work in hvac wholesale and get to see new houses after they’re framed and whatnot on a daily basis, but I never get to see the beginning stages of a home being built. My dad is a retired plumber and from when I was 8 until I was 18 he brought me on new construction and service jobs every break from school. The amount of things he’s taught me and continues to teach me even at 29 years old is amazing. Most kids at 16 years old were going to Florida on vacation with their families. I was running sewer rods solo and I’m so thankful for all that I learned during those years.
Not only is this cabin build entertaining to watch, the video is also relaxing because the guitar music in the background doesn't interfere with the narration- it supports it without being too loud or annoying. Bravo! If Bob Ross built cabins...
"If Bob Ross built cabins..."
My brother Russ Carr of Greenville Maine. Home to Moosehead Lake Russ wants to sell his 4 bedroom 2 bathroom house.in Greenville Junction.then build or have built a cabin like this right on the water.its his many yrs.dream.I hope God blesses Russ with this hope he has. He is a good man of 66 yrs young.
@Peter Paul Guitar
41 minutes and 21 seconds of the best thing I’ve watched in a long time. Brilliant video, brilliantly filmed, edited and I love how there’d be a little music and then the beautiful sounds of nature. I’m with you, you can’t beat a bloody good fire. I’m not gonna lie, I’m very envious you have this beautiful place and I’m in awe of your craftsmanship. Absolutely brilliant. Thank You for sharing. Respect and admiration to you from England. 💙😍💙
Thank you. This is so inspiring. We own very remote wooden property and have a dream to have a small cabin on it. Videos' such as yours fill us with such hope that this can be achieved by us and with our handwork. Most excellent. I look forward to watching more of your videos to come.
You did a great job on the cabin, and the filming/video of it all was absolutely excellent. Totally enjoyed watching it. Thanks. A cabin in the woods.... Doesn't get any better.
Watching this video was almost a spiritual experience, thank you so much! 2 questions about moisture and the walls: the outside layer is underlayment, isnt that going to rot without protection? And wouldnt you need a cavity in the wall for air circulation? Thank you!
This video is so satisfying and also informative. I really enjoyed watching it 💖
Your a good person
Do you have any children
Patti's good life been so funny
This is one of the most relaxing yet rewarding videos I have seen. Long been a fan of tiny house living so loved this. I dream of escaping the mad world we live in
This is so amazing and a HUGE inspiration!! Can anyone with some experience fill me in on how the moisture will affect the wood exterior? It was just plywood, right? Won't it be falling apart in a year or two?
This is my absolute FAVORITE cabin build... how much would you charge to build it for me? Also, how long did it take you to complete it? Love your videos!
World class production! This video is a freaking masterpiece! Well done Sir!
What an awesome video! Great job on the cabin!
@Bushradical this was a great video, thanks for sharing, in the process of selling my house, you could definitely build me a cabin, awesome job. Thanks again.
This guy needs a channel shout out!
Thanks so much!
Dave. Fantastic job. You are one talented carpenter/builder. Really enjoyed this and managed to learn a few things too.
Beautiful video💕 this reminds me of when my papa built my own little cabin on our property just for me. He kindly let me help, I learned so much by watching and doing whatever he showed me how to do. I will cherish those memories forever!
I love and appreciate you & your wife so much!!! You guys are amazing and we are so thankful you both share so much with us!! 🙋🏻♀️💜
Excellent, relaxing entertaining, fun to watch, beautiful. Thank you for an enjoyable 25 and a half minutes. What an exceptional talented and hard working guy. Loved every minute of it!!!
Can we just take a second to enjoy the time he spent setting up the camera angles? It would’ve taken him probably half the time to finish this project, but instead he chose to make some nice, satisfying content for us. What a guy.
@Family Friendly I just got an ad mate
@FunkoFever the video has no ads
@M attal 🤣
@FunkoFever not monetised
It's not like he was doing it out of the kindness of his heart. He did it for views, and to make himself money. Stop being naive.
This was so satisfying to watch, very entertaining and educational. I envy those that can build things, I never was able to learn how. This turned out beautiful, thanks for the video.
You’re right everything has a sequence and it’s priority. I love the way the cabin came out. I try and do everything as much as I can here at home off the grid. Somebody asked me why buy a lot of solar lights. And a generator that I can use with solar panels. I explain to them during the day they get their power from the sun and at night they light up my whole house enough for me to lay in bed and read a book. Anything I can do off the grid is just right for me.
Well, that was thoroughly enjoyable. Thanks for sharing. I totally want to take a crack at it myself now. I’ve done very little building myself, but watching your video, gave me the courage to give it a go. Enjoy that dope little cabin bud 🏡 ✌️
Thank you for filming this. I thought of building a small cabin but watching you build it, I realize its a lot of work even though its a rough small cabin.
i can’t even imagine taking on this sort of building project never mind filming and documenting the entire thing with this sort of quality. i’m extremely impressed.
@Matthew Milam very true
If you don’t try it will never happen
@Jordan Mulyyy That would be a great reality show. Can you build a cabin in the woods.
Beautiful build and excellent filming ! Aspiration with planning and know how along with patience always wins out . Enjoy the treasured times in your cabin :):):)
What a wonderful video. Definitely the type of project on my to-do list. Though putting up the front wall complete is a fantastic goal, knowing I can't lift that much weight, I would have opted to put up the frame and then sheet it after it was up.
This is the best video I've seen on YT. Thank you! You make this looks so easy like you're just assembling an IKEA furniture. If I attempt this now, I would die trying and my body would be found long after the winter along a disaster of a project.
This brings back so many childhood memories for me. My dad built a little cabin in the woods and I "helped". I was probably in the way most of the time, but he still put up with me. It was a weekend project away from home so we slept in a tent on the property. Fast forward 32 years. I am now the owner of that little cabin in the woods. My husband and I also own a beautiful 3200 sq. ft. log house on 20 acres that we call home. Funny thing is I'd rather live in the 18x20 cabin in the woods that doesn't have running water or electricity and is heated only by wood
Love it man. This is on my list of desires.

Very good video. I love how you are making it your own way for you. A question: Is there a risk that the foundation posts will rot in the ground?
Sir, congratulations on your hard work, it was so awesome to watch and learn the process, hope someday I can do it myself, thank you very much for sharing this, cheers from Brazil.
Real nice job planning, building and documenting the job. It’s an inspiration for anyone wanting to build a small building. Reminds me of Dick Proenneke and his “Alone in the Wilderness” journal.
This is quality content. Great narration, great shots, just awesome content! Keep up the great work!
Wow. This guy can build!
@garry weinberg I think he mainly just built it for youtube views/as cheap as possible. But could have easily poured some footings before hand and made structure actually last
@The Trashman unless it’s surrounded by great drainage but I would always go above grade one foot. In UP in Mich much higher
@Kyle Moore u r a sad little man
Fantastic! Your efforts are so relaxing, educational, and inspiring. Thank you!
I started watching this at midnight to pass a few minutes before sleep. Watched the whole thing straight through, absolutely superb. Hats off to you sir. One of the best things I have ever seen on this here tube.
Nice 👍 job, you showed me a lot of carpentry skills in building, I've built a small cabin before, but nothing like that, mine was done with 2x4's and plywood, but it served the purpose, thanks for sharing your skills
I watched this whole thing. Start to finish and I loved it. I wish I had a husband who could do this. You are an incredible man
You just watched the whole video ... Build it yourself!
One of the coolest vids I seen this year, amazing job.
I see you on old videos talking about machinima, Metal videos and now here too. You show up literally everywhere
@topan g No one asked or cares about your spam bud.
Gary more still got the blues fingerstyle 👇 thmy.info/dev/r62qgNucx4LIh4c/w-d-xo.html ,
I love watching snow fall when the flakes are huge. The quiet serenity of that cabin must be sheer bliss! In real time, how many weeks did it take you to build this and how many hours per day did you put in. Were you able to literally work on this all day every day or just on days off from work? What about a bed for you and the Mrs? Do you guys spend the night there or just the day?
Hey thanks for bringing us along on your building adventure, I really appreciate your effort in doing this, be safe my friend.
Dude, you did an excellent job with this especially making the viewer feel like they were there with you helping. I would live in this with no problem. Great job.
It's funny how sometimes the best streaming service is at no charge. I can honestly say that of recent, I found more enjoyment watching this than anything else I've seen on my paid streaming services, and that's saying a lot. I just want to say thank you for putting sooo much love and time into this video. It was very relaxing and enjoyable.
This is Discovery Channel level quality video making. I would easily watch a show about this kind of stuff all day. You just got yourself a new subscriber, Mr. Bushradical. I'm an engineer, so I'd love to actually build a cabin similar to this instead of doing calculations in an office all day. Something about using your hands to actually make something just feels right.
You would probably love the video of Dick Proenneke building his log cabin in alaska, very similar style of video to this. Its called "Alone in the wilderness" not sure if its on THmy or not but i Highly recommend it
@InspirationNation It is. Unfortunately in school we don't learn any of the hands on stuff. I can tell you all about the tensile and compressive strength of wood or any other material and how thick a beam needs to be to support "x" amount of weight, but the actual installation of the beam and how to use all of the tools is not covered. Most engineers are "self taught" in the hands on portion because we like it and that's what drove us to engineering in the first place, but there is no guarantee an engineer will know how to use every tool or know the tricks of the carpentry trade. I really like thermodynamic systems, and that's what I specialize in (think rockets and internal combustion engines) so other than the basics, woodworking is a very foreign topic to me. I know I could learn it, and that's part of the reason I'm watching these videos. To learn tips and tricks and expand my knowledge!
Isn’t engineering similar to woodworking? Also, is engineering similar to something like carpentry as well?
Love this video and it's very inspiring. I do have a question: why do you use screws on the deck but nails elsewhere? Are screws for thicker wood? Your expertise is welcome.
I love watching this and part 2 over and over to try to build up confidence. I also love watching A Girl in the Woods! You two are doing great!
Now I gotta go look up the definition of cribbing! 😎
This is awesome. My only complaints/style thing would be to concrete the foundation piers, add flashing and maybe a gutter for the roof, and do some in-wall wiring for an external power supply of some sort (maybe a generator or solar/power bank). Wishing I could build one myself.
It's because of you that my wife and I built our first cabin. I would love for you all to see it. Not sure if you have social media that I could upload a picture, but we are pretty proud of it. Just wanted you all to know that you and God were the inspiration for the build. :)
This is by far one of the best cabin-raising videos I’ve ever watched. Great shots, easy narration, appropriate soundtrack, educational and entertaining, and of course, I have a fondness for the Upper Midwest. Felt like my uncle was talking me through a build. Can’t wait to see if there’s an update or part 2!
@Olivia • Idle Hour •liar
@Matt Christoff i don't want to lie. I typed this during a migraine i had for an entire day i was throwing up and felt pain in indescribable ways. There was a point i was trying to see how my head felt and wwtched s video and it flaried up again. I passed out and went to the ER and found out i have a benign tumor behind my eye and frontal sinus. Thankfully not cancerous. I just typed more long hardly coherent stuff sorry. The IV for pain isn't helping. I felt bad for typing nonsense lol. Be well. Sorry again.
@Olivia • Idle Hour • I guess anything is possible! It's a small world, indeed.
@لعشاق الأجواء الهادئة Relaxing atmosphere leave this guy alone. He looks like my friends friend Matthew Christoff, or just Christoff. Don't listen to this bot thing Christoff.
You look like this guy Matt Christoff My friend Ashley is friends with I met once.
What a great build ! Well done 👏 Thank you for your content.
Love the simplicity but the detail at the same time... nicely done. Cheers
I watch videos like this all the time. I'm into diy builds, and off grid stuff. But they don't all get these sorts of views in this short of time. This tells me that everyone just wants to get way, and chill by themselves for a minute.
I LOVE this guy work ! I just could not stop watching :) . Good job man !!! I am not an professional woodworker, but I think he made 1 mistake : under the metal roof he needs an membrane to protect wood from condensation drip’s, this will happen every morning.
you sure do make good videos, well done
How do you know when the woods end. Its like a fence, are we inside or out of the woods. Only you know probably. Respect for knowing.
Nice build! From modern day building options I use LVL headers, more screws than nails and adhesive on sub flooring. Enjoy your cabin.
As a 16 year old who used to remodel houses and has some experience with building things like decks and stuff I can really appreciate this cabin design and I think I'm going to use it it's very nice
It is such a pleasure to watch an experienced carpenter build. My grandfather was a carpenter. I hope one day to plan and maybe even build my own very small house. Thank you for this wonderful video. I am sure I will come back to this one.
I enjoyed this from start to finish. What a nice job. Everything so squared up and neat. Awesome! Thanks for the hard work and making the video.
oh my gosh! I loved "you can nail a lot of boards together for $600 a month!" I've been trying to explain this to my family for so long but never knew how to put it into words. I'm moving to my land in January and really have never built anything bigger than a birdhouse (in 3rd grade for 4H). Everybody keeps telling me "Why don't you just get an apartment?". So I've been deemed the crazy lady of the family. Thanks for being an inspiration!
@Olivia • Idle Hour • family heritage was German farmers
@Jay xcv solar for electricity, or kerosene lamps, camp showers, ( I also have a membership with Planet Fitness for showering), I have a camp toilet until the outhouse is built, and I’ve lived without internet/WiFi for 10+ years. WiFi is not a necessity ever, lol
What about the electricity, showers, toilet and wifi? Lol
Yoo wheat craft is the name of my game. You craft wheat probably
@Tabula Rasa 600 a month of lumber is basically working on it one day a month until it 's done at current rate.
Amazing! Well done Dave! I would have flown out and helped! You are a real inspiration Bro! Subscribed!
If you happen to see this, it is a great video with a lot of teaching moments. I built a large deck with a tin roof a while back and learned a lot, but it isn't as precise as your work. Did you use marine plywood, or just regular stock? I put concrete in my post holes up to above ground hoping that the treated posts would last longer.
Super efficient building man. Really enjoyed the video. I could see myself making so many mistakes building that.. well done
This was really amazing to watch, now I want to buy a lot of land and build myself a cabin lol. The quality of this video was phenomenal, I'm talking tv quality stuff. Keep up the outstanding work.
I certainly would love to be able to go into the Woods for a nice little vacation especially if I had a Cabin like this one. What a great job you did, it’s small but oh so comfortable and appealing. I have lived in the Sierras near Yosemite National Park in a beautiful Cabin my Great Grandparents built back in the 1880’s. Like yours my G Grandparents built it from the ground up, with only my Grandmother, my Grandfather, my Great Aunt, and my two Great Uncles as the builders. It was a beautiful and quiet large Cabin, it had 1300 sq. Feet. Of course it was their home so everything had to be perfect. I inherited the Cabin and the land from my Parents back in 1965. I lived in that Cabin until 2017. I raised my four Children in it as well as two of my Grandchildren. Unfortunately I had to move to a larger City because of health reasons. My Children now own the Cabin and the property but I still try to visit our beautiful Cabin at least once a year on Vacation. Hopefully it will stay in my Family for many years to come…
I hated to see this video end….it was soooo darn interesting!!!! You are very talented! I would love a cabin like that in the woods. I hope you and your wife Brooke get to enjoy it for many years!!!!!
Very nice relaxing video to watch. I think building that would be easier than setting up all the camera shots, I can't imagine how tedious that was. Cheers. 😊
Nice job, I'd love to do something like this. I live in England and we don't have much wilderness and land costs a small fortune.
As someone who has always dreamed of building my own little cabin in the woods but never got any foundation in construction, I thank you immensely for filming the entire process and showing how easy it can actually be. It's a huge inspiration, and I hope to start on my own cabin next season!
Go for it!
@Raymond Ashby Have you decided on a WiFi password yet. Having a hard time getting Spectrum to come run the cables for mine probably do it myself AT&T satellite isn’t so noticeable on the back side of the roof
@Faith Sasser keep it up!
@Brain Scott I do plan on buffing up anyway, though. Thanks for the good luck, we'll need all we can get!
@Andrew F. We are actually working on finishing a small concrete home that's been in the works for almost two years longer than what we had planned for due to the material shortages and other "life happens" reasons, so I totally agree that it's much much easier to do the planning than it is the actual building. I have no misconceptions about that haha

Wow, it is my dream to build a cabin by my own. Great work! What the power station did you use for indoor light ?
F.Y.I. when screwing metal roofing or siding you should screw on the high ribs - for both water tightness and heat expansion, which can cause the holes to enlarge if screwed in the flat part. The high ribs have flex to them, that's one reason they are a high profile (the other is strength.) Plus a hole on top has much less chance of leaking even if the screw hole enlarges later.
Very rarely these days do I come across a THmy video that captivates my undivided attention for a full 40 minutes, without getting distracted or pausing whatsoever. This video was definitely one of those occasions, loved every minute of it. You’re living the dream, amazing job on the cabin and the video!
You’re absolutely right. I just realized that I clicked the video and watched it in its entirety without pausing or putting it on my “Watch Later” list. That’s how I know this was a masterpiece.
Hoo-wee, time flies when you see the outdoors.
Wait a minute, 41min.... ?!
Well said. My thoughts exactly.
I found it relaxing just watching you work mate. Brilliant job. On the cabin and the episode. Both well made. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.
Love it!! Just FYI, I love that you leave the roof as long as possible for light while shooting lol. In the future, once the roof is on I think some reflector panels would go a long way to light your interior for better video with no power needed while in the bush.
I am at 4:40 and I already love it, cant wait to see the end result. I am amazed that you did it all by yourself
Roughly how much did it cost you to build this cabin? I'm looking to do the same and would like to plan. Love the place!
I have always seen myself as one with a short attention span. I always seem to skip around videos to see parts I want to and what not. But there is something about documenting the outdoors, and building something with ones hands, that just takes me to a different place. I watched the whole 40 minute videos without thinking about clicking off and watching something else once. I would like to thank you for the incredible job that you’ve done on the cabin, and on the video. Your cinematography is outstanding. The subtle music in the background, and the cinematic shots of the nature around you really tie the whole thing together. Also the occasional story here and there are really something special. I hope the cabin serves you well and houses many good memories.
Couldnt have said it better myself. I totally cannot watch long videos. I watched this whole thing and did not skip a second or pause once. WOW
Wow...I really thought this video was only 16 minutes but it sucked me in! I can't believe how much videos like these can actually calm my heartbeat!
Great video! Quick question though: @15:52 it looks like you pre cut the plywood to fit around [half] the doorway and then when you couldn’t pick the wall up at first I see you did the same for the other half of the door. Could you have pre cut the plywood for the window, too? Thanks for any feedback, sir
I could have....but I thought I could lift the wall.......
I thought this was extremely well done and really fascinating. Thanks so much for sharing!!!
Pretty close to exactly my plan within 2 years. Working for Menards, I am planning my exodus from Chicagoland area to Northwoods of WI and executing something like this. Transfer is already accepted just looking for the right chunk of land. #NextGenChampPups are ready to hit the trails of the Northwoods. Thanks for this vid!
Wow. I’m smiling the whole time. You really know what you’re doing and very clean. Thank you for sharing and showing us how it’s done.
Enjoying your cabin builds, being an amateur at this I have definitely learned a lot. I was going to purchase a Derksen building to finish off on my land but you and your wife have inspired us to build our own off grid cabin. Thankful for both of your channels keep the vids coming.
It’s nice to get a break from the Crazy side of THmy, watching calm cool and collected guys making dope Content like this is always great to find. I actually loved this video!
@Bushradical I have the upmost respect for you and truly admired your talent, skills, and go get it attitude. Hands down it makes me wanna build one like this because I love the outdoor life. And I was wondering what is the model number on that power pack you have if you don't mind sharing? Hats off to you my brother amazing job keep it up. I am a new subscriber and I'm locked in forever. You got me motivated to buy a piece of land just to do something like this.
What a great job! I love watching people with real carpentry skills. One of my favorite things to do. Build. Good luck
Very nicely done! Great video. That would definitely be a great place to relax and unplug any time of year. Thank you for sharing.
This is so sick!!! Wish I had some land to build something like this. What a sweet little getaway.
You narrated all of this journey of building the cabin so beautifully, it’s very peaceful and soothing to watch. Much love from India 🇮🇳
How much time of planning on materials take? It's on my bucket list to do something like this. Fantastic video!
The “hard sand” can support at most 3000 psf ( probably more like 2000 psf) and without a poured footing your 6x6 piers are 1/4 sf and can support only 750 lb per pier for a total cabin weight of 6000 lb. Also, the rim joists and ledger boards must support the total weight of the cabin less the piers and this load is transmitted to the piers by way too few nails. The rim joist (at a minimum) and the ledger boards should be supported by the piers directly or via some steel brackets or notches in the piers or with extra added corbels. I think that a few seasons will begin to show failure in the deck system without proper footing
Thanks for your observations on ways to improve the construction so the rest of us may do a better job If we choose to build something similar so that that will last much longer!
Dude I loved watching you. My father-in law talked me into building a 1500 sq ft ranch in 1985. He taught me all I needed to know. I went on to build a 3 stall garage with a beautiful wood shop. I still love the work but at 68 I can't work those 12 to 13 hour days anymore. Your talents will provide you with a very rewarding life. Don't forget. Jesus was a carpenter!!!
I love these videos! Its very calming and relaxing to watch after a long day of work.
