Making a bolt with ZIGZAG threads - SO STRANGE! - Lost PLA metal casting

แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

In this video I will be making a bolt with unique zigzag threads. I started this project by 3d printing models in a plastic called PLA. Then I coated the models 10 times with a ceramic material called Suspendaslurry. After the ceramic shells were completely dry I placed them in my kiln and melted out the PLA plastic. At 1500 degrees Fahrenheit the ceramic shells became vitrified, turning into a ceramic that can withstand the heat of molten bronze. I melted the bronze in my homemade keg foundry furnace and then poured the liquid metal into the ceramic shell molds. This is similar to the lost wax casting process.

@Crazy Traveler Some fucking idiot has stopped the Tool Industry from making a 6 point end wrench the only time I have ever seen a 12 point nut or bolt is when you would buy A.R.P. Nuts and Bolts for race engines You go to your local hardware store and go to the Nut or Bolt section you will find more 6 sided Nuts and Bolts than anything ... no matter if it's Metric or S.A.E.

you should definitely make two of these with the ends cast together so that you can just flip it over and the nuts flow down to the other bolt. like an hourglass! love your videos and designs

Crazy video man, totally loved the process. It would be great if you could screw a bolt head on the other end as well. If you make it probably thinner and longer, It'll may work like a hourglass or minute counter, only if you figure out the time it takes for a threaded bolt to actually go up or down with gravity.

I'm not amazed by the casting part, it's like buying some powder in a supermarket add some milk or water and claiming that you have made a sauce. I used to cast in sand, sometimes small simple bells for a carillon other times big sculptures that were made up of 40-50 different parts of sand blocks that were assembled into a 3-dimensional puzzle with a smaller version inside so that the statue is hollow when finished.

This is great! 👍🤩 Could you design this, but in a continuous circle? Perhaps by designing two half circles, place the nut (or more than one?) in and connect the two halfs. Could be tricky though, because the thread probably should be designed bent, I guess? Would be a great fidget toy as well.

I'm a physics teacher and the first thought I had watching your end products was just how good of a demonstration it is of rotational momentum. Nice work. I doubt you would get a similar effect with your plastic 3D printed versions since they have such low mass. Although, I suppose glueing some rods to the nuts would add enough rotational inertia to make it happen.

The 3Dprinted plastic works but you loose the magic and satisfying ting as the nuts change Direction. Also loose the inertia jogging the Bolt back and forth as the nuts change direction. You could put the plastic bolt first on a Low friction Bearing or surface it would Probably still Toggle back forth from the nuts momentum. Lovely invention to play with for the curious mind. Great physics lesson tool I could imagine.

Similar to pen spinning but a little more user friendly so that basically anyone can try and do tricks with it, and as of my experience is also kind of relaxing just to spin it which makes it useful anyway. What would these go for if you were to sell them? The effect might be more dramatic if you employed a nut the same thickness as the head of the bolt. Even if it retained the same amount of thread as in the thin versions. The extra weight might remove the transition stalling.

No the difference would probably be in how much more the bolt spins every time the nut changes direction. Most of the nut's velocity is going outwards, not downwards because of how much it's spinning.

I love how it's so smooth that gravity is enough to thread the nut on. I wonder what the fastest angular velocity you could achieve would be - maybe a variable pitch thread? Starts out steep to get some speed an initial rotation, and ends in a very shallow pitch to ramp up the rotations.

@DieselDabz710 If you're asking if this solves world hunger, or will be the next big innovation in electric power generation, then no to both. Sometimes people just do things to do it, even when there is no point, where easier faster options are already available. Maybe there will be a day when they think: "hey, I wonder if I can use this thing I made before, to do this other thing" and have another project to work on. Its like a series about getting hydro power from roof gutters. Its a great proof of concept, but it was never going to be best or easiest option to..say charge a phone. If that was the point, a solar panel would have gotten the job done on day 1. watch this series when you've got some sit-down time: Rain Gutter POWER thmy.info/dev/i5ikftnHzqGqonc/w-d-xo.html

@DieselDabz710 how often have you been asked "what are you thinking about?" and responded "nothing" This is what happens when you engage with something that crossed your mind, and choose to act upon that very question. This is why we have everything we have. Sometimes we create things from specific need, other times we create, or play with ideas, that we eventually find a need, or use, for.

Nice video, I like it alot and learned things. I used a dull hack saw to cut down some handle bars the other day. It's all I had to use, right then. It sucked and took forever. Also I probably didn't have the blade tight enough either.

Thanks, I think you did a great job. I do have one thing for you to make, but the information will not be put out on the internet/ intarnet until its already in my hand. And I have an eye popping storie to go with it that goes way back to ancient times. So far, not one person that claims they want to do a new project has taken me up on it, even though it could be worth all the gold on earth. Peace bro. Kool video

The ting it makes every time a nut switches directions is just absolutely exquisite and brings me great satisfaction every single time. It sounds like you have just achieved or unlocked something truly astonishing in a video game when it makes the sound. I do truly hope that you would sell 3D printed models of these because I could and would play with these all day long.

That was refreshingly well put-together, man. Good job. The idea for zig-zag threading is simple and easily conferred, yet (I suspect) lies within a sphere of reality only rarely visited, much less brought to life before our very eyes. I appreciated the decently flat volume levels, your concise and smooth verbal narration with factual, well-worded content/descriptions/explanations and everything else as well!

1.)Do a ring with threads so the nut goes forever, 2.) can you make a splice and take different routes like a train track? 3.) so you can put a reciprocation working end and a berring on the nut, wonder if you can collect the up and down stroke by having an inner drive shaft and an outer drive shaft.

We have versions of these at work. We call them 'Levelwinds' and they are about 3" in diameter and about 6' long. Mounted on a trailer that has a big rope reel on it for pulling in powerlines overhead. The 'nut' is actually a grooved roller that goes back and forth from one side to the other and back again insuring the rope gets evenly wound up on the rope reel. Also, it is razor sharp!

This is amazing. I'm actually trying to come up with some real world application other than a desk toy. Perhaps a really difficult angle in which a wrench wouldn't normally work but now it does because you can simply move it back and forth and still tighten the bolt. Or another idea. Around where the thread changes direction you could have 2 bolts next to each other. When you'd somehow be able to lock the bolts together and they are positioned on opposite threads it would be impossible to turn them.

If you can remove the bolt head and make the bolt longer you could stick a (well lubed) bearing onto it and when then using a finer thread pitch that incrementally changes (this will be important) you can try and make this the clock source for a mechanical clock. you just need to get the weight of the nut(s) and the thread pitches right so that as the nut accellerates on its way down the thread will ensure that the bolt always rotates at the same speed. making it an accurate time source... getting those ratios right is an entirely different story...

Tip for powereashing. Put up a large piece of plastic with a hole in the middle for the sprayer to go through. Or where the hole is, attach a bag to it, so you can stick your hand through it, keeping it dry and still having the full control of that sprayer.

То же самое можно сделать с обычным болтом увеличив шаг резьбы, а на гайке оставив четыре малых выступа от одного витка резьбы для минимизации трения. Выглядит красиво, но крепежные качества нулевые.
